TRICARE Beneficiaries Are Allowed Counseling

without a Doctor’s Referral

Long deployment, regular PCS, and reintegration to civilian life are only some of the common factors that make military life difficult and challenging. Many families are able to handle the demands and challenges with ease, but others may need help in the form of psychological, emotional, and behavioral health counseling and treatment.

American service members, veterans, and their families have a unique culture and health needs that may not be understood within their community. Those in the military are at a higher risk for developing health conditions than the general population. For example, the US Department of Veterans Affairs reports that out of the 1.7 million service members who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, 14 percent have post-deployment depression, 12 to 25 percent have PTSD, 11 to 19 percent have traumatic brain injury, and 18 to 25 percent have other psychological health risks or concerns. These brave soldiers and their spouses and children are also likely to experience emotional crises and behavioral problems.

TRICARE Supports the Mental Health Care Needs of Service Members and Their Families

The Department of Defense (DoD) is cognizant of the fact that the effects of war extend beyond the conflict zone. Even after deployment, returning service members and their families struggle with functioning and relationship issues resulting from the long absence as well as the ensuing changes. For this reason, the needs of the entire family are met through health benefits that include counseling support through TRICARE.

US military personnel and retirees, their dependents, and some members of the Reserve Component are entitled to health benefits under the TRICARE program. It covers a host of professional services provided by a worldwide network of TRICARE-authorized providers who specialize in addressing emotional and behavioral issues.

Due to the growing needs of eligible TRICARE members and their beneficiaries, getting outside help from civilian counselors is also allowed, making it possible to seek counseling from a professional you fully trust. Dependents or retirees can see a counselor without getting a doctor’s referral. Active duty service members are, however, required to get a referral from their MTF to avail themselves of off-post counseling.

When seeking professional counseling outside the network, it is important to find a counselor who accepts TRICARE and understands the unique needs and concerns of the military clientele and their families.
